British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
