No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
