The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
