The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
